The following suggestions are designed to assist users who are trying to optimise the quality of the video that they are watching. We hope you find them useful.

Generally speaking, there are 3 factors that influence the quality of the video that you are watching.

The first is the quality and speed of your bandwidth and connection. Unfortunately, depending on where you live, the service that you receive from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can be very variable. This means that on Tuesday at 2.00am your connection may be great but at the weekend it may deteriorate significantly.

At busy periods it isn’t just your local ISP that is put under pressure. The websites and services that provide the video streams are also affected. Usually they are big enough to deal with these issues but sometimes but sometimes they too struggle.

Our service is also subject to the pressures of demand, and, although to try all we can to make sure the service is as good as possible, it can degrade in certain areas at peak time.

So what can you do to make sure that things run as smoothly as possible? Here are some ideas:

  1. -Make sure you local internet connection is as stable and as reliable as possible.

  2. -If the quality of the image is less than optimal, reduce the resolution of the image. Switch from ‘High Resolution’ to ‘Standard Resolution’.

  3. -Try using a different TV4Expats Server. Naturally, people tend to use UK1 or UK2 a lot more than UK3 or UK 4. If you are experiencing issues, please switch to one of the other servers. For a current list of servers and their addresses, click here.

  4. -If you are downloading using iPlayer, do it at a less popular time.
